Find Federal Custody Releases

To find someone released from federal custody after a Logan County connection, first identify whether the person was a sentenced Bureau of Prisons resident or a pretrial detainee held for the U.S. Marshals Service. Those federal channels do different jobs. The public BOP locator can retain a release result for many sentenced federal prisoners. USMS has no equivalent public person locator for its pretrial detainees. A person may also be housed in a contract jail outside Logan County. The correct federal release check follows the actual custodian and does not treat a county-jail transfer as community release.

Federal Releases Linked to Logan

No federal prison was located in Logan County. The Federal Bureau of Prisons and U.S. Marshals Service appear in the facility map because a Logan County case or arrest can enter federal jurisdiction, not because either agency operates a local Logan jail. A county officer may transfer a person to a federal custodian, or federal authorities may arrange housing in a contract jail.

That movement is not a release. Obtain the county jail’s movement sheet first. It should identify the date, time, event, and receiving agency. Then use the receiving federal channel. A sentenced federal prisoner belongs in BOP records. A person awaiting federal court while held for USMS requires a different records and court path.

Search BOP Federal Releases

The BOP inmate locator is the main public route for sentenced federal prisoners. It covers federal prisoners released since 1982 and can return a release date with wording such as “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody.” Those labels mean the person is not then held by BOP. They do not, by themselves, prove freedom from every other custodian or legal obligation.

  1. Search by BOP register number, DCDC number, FBI number, or INS number when known.
  2. Otherwise use the full name and narrow the result with the identity fields offered.
  3. Compare the register number, age, race, sex, and any other displayed identifiers.
  4. Read the location or release wording exactly as the locator presents it.
  5. Save the release date and register number, then compare them with the federal court docket.
  6. If another hold or transfer is possible, ask the last custodian where the person went.

BOP federal release locator for a Logan County custody check

The locator supplies the federal prison status and release date, while the court and movement records explain the legal path around that event.

Read BOP Release Results

A BOP release result is a federal prison record. It should not be relabeled as a Logan County jail release. The displayed date can show when BOP custody ended, but another agency may have received the person. A detainer is a request or order through which another authority seeks custody. Ask whether one affected the exit.

Released
A BOP locator status showing the person left BOP custody on the displayed date.
Not in BOP Custody
A statement that BOP does not currently hold the person, not a promise of community presence.
Register number
The federal identifier that helps distinguish people with similar names.
Detainer
A custody claim or notice that may direct the person to another authority.

The locator does not replace the sentencing docket, supervised-release record, or a requested BOP file. Supervised release is a federal court term served in the community after imprisonment. It differs from Kansas parole, KDOC postrelease supervision, and county probation.

USMS Release Record Limits

The U.S. Marshals Service prisoner program handles federal pretrial custody, transport, and detention functions. A USMS detainee may be placed in a state, local, or private contract facility. No public USMS name locator comparable to BOP was verified. Searching the BOP locator for a pretrial detainee can therefore yield no useful result even while federal custody continues.

Start with the federal district-court case. The docket may show detention, release conditions, transfer, sentencing, or commitment to BOP. Ask the physical housing jail for its admission and movement records, then confirm which federal district and deputy-marshal office held authority. The USMS District of Kansas page supplies district contacts.

If the event cannot be confirmed through the court or housing facility, use the USMS FOIA route for an existing agency record. Describe the person, known federal case, approximate detention dates, housing jail, and the exact custody or movement record sought. FOIA is a records process, not an emergency locator.

Confirm a Federal Release

A reliable Logan-connected federal result follows the custody chain. Do not jump from a missing county roster name to BOP. First establish that federal authorities received the person. Then distinguish federal pretrial custody from a sentenced BOP commitment.

  1. Ask the Logan or serving county jail for the receiving agency and transfer timestamp.
  2. Locate the federal court case and read the current detention, release, or sentencing order.
  3. For a sentenced prisoner, search BOP with the federal identifier and record the exact status.
  4. For a USMS detainee, contact the housing jail and district office because no public USMS locator exists.
  5. Request the existing movement or release record when public online sources do not resolve the event.
Release versus transfer: leaving Logan or Thomas County custody for USMS or BOP is continued custody, not release to the community.

Federal Records and Court Proof

The federal court docket supplies the legal reason for detention or release. A BOP result supplies the federal prison status. The county or contract jail supplies the physical movement record when it housed the person. These sources may carry different dates because they record different acts.

Ask for existing records in a narrow date range. Useful fields include full name, federal register or case number, admission date, releasing or transferring facility, event date and time, event type, receiving agency, and release conditions when publicly available. Do not ask one office to create a narrative that merges records held by several custodians.

No local federal prison, fixed federal release hour, Logan-specific federal release form, or USMS public locator was found. Those absences are part of the correct answer. They keep the search tied to the actual federal authority instead of an invented local facility.

Federal Supervision After Release

A person who leaves BOP custody may begin federal supervised release under the sentencing court. That term does not mean BOP still holds the person, and it is not Kansas parole or Northwest Kansas Community Corrections probation. The federal docket and the assigned federal probation office are the correct sources for the court-ordered term.

Read the BOP date and supervision record as separate events. The prison release date records the end of BOP confinement. The judgment or later court order sets supervision conditions and length. A violation can produce a new court proceeding, but a supervision allegation does not prove current detention without a supporting custody record.

When a Logan County reader needs only to confirm the federal prison exit, the BOP locator and requested BOP record remain central. When the question concerns current federal supervision, use the federal case and probation channel. This division prevents a federal community status from being mistaken for Kansas state parole.
